Canine Health Resources

The following organizations support health testing and research in various breeds including the Pomeranian:

AKC Canine Health Foundation
Read abstracts for the different research projects currently underway at the AKC’s Canine Health Foundation, and learn about the CHF’s goals and purposes. A contact address for donations is also provided.

The Canine Epilepsy Project

This site is provided as a resource for all those concerned with canine epilepsy: owners and breeders of affected dogs, veterinarians, neurologists, and researchers. Researchers working on this project need information from affected dogs and their families.

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

The OFA is a not-for-profit organization originally created to assist breeders in addressing hip dysplasia. In recent years OFA has added databases to assist breeders in assessing elbow and patella deformities, craniomandibular osteopathy, autoimmune thyroiditis, congenital heart disease, copper toxicosis, eye disease, and DNA databases.

VetGen Veterinary Genetic Services

For its cataract research project, VetGen is seeking DNA samples from at least two or more affected dogs within a litter (or one each from a repeat breeding), DNA from the parents (at least one, preferably both) and DNA from one or two of the unaffected littermates. For the PRA project, which is further along, VetGen needs only DNA samples from the affected dogs. The dogs’ pedigrees should also be included.
