Merle is a pattern, and as such it can appear on any base color (chocolate, black, blue, orange). With the many colors Poms come in, this leads to a huge number of possible combinations. All combinations are shown in the Any Other Allowable Color (AOAC) class as specialties.

Blue Merle
The merle pattern on what would have otherwise been a black pom is referred to as Blue Merle. It is a classic gray/black pattern. Blue merle is actually a black dog with the dilution gene acting upon the black areas of the coat. The eye rims, nose, lips and to pads are black. One or both eyes genetically may be blue, blue marbled, have blue flecks or be brown. Please note that the Pomeranian Standard has a Disqualification for blue eyes, blue marbling or blue flecks. Eyes must be dark.

Chocolate Merle
This merle pattern on what would have been a chocolate dog is referred to as chocolate merle. This dog will have a chocolate nose and pigment and the merle pattern will be chocolate to silvery chocolate. Eye rim, nose and toe pads will be chocolate/liver. Eye color is the same as blue merle stated above.
Merle with Other Patterns
In addition to appearing on any base color, merle can also appear in combination with other patterns. Merle & Tan, Merle Parti, Merle & Tan Parti.
